titles. Grow Mural and Bee Mural

statement.

To encourage a growth mindset right at the beginning of the school year, a giant bulletin board was converted into a large-scale coloring page; with the word “GROW” in bubble letters at the center. Baskets of crayons rested on the floor next to the mural, and anyone/everyone was encouraged to add some color to the mural. This mural stayed up the entire school year, and by the late spring, the mural grew past the bulletin when students added bees and flowers to the wall display.

For the Bee Mural, kindergarten through 2nd grade students studied the anatomy of bees and replicated it with clay during art class. After, students were taught about the variety of bee's homes. We focused on the honeybee’s home for the next art assignment, where students cut a hexagon then printed found materials to make a relief on them. They also drew their own bee to attach to their individual hexagon. All of the hexagons were tacked to the wall to form a giant honeycomb home. Lastly, students learned about the source of food for bees and what the word pollinator means. A garden of paper flowers were made and displayed at the base of this mural hallway. After the flower addition, students sat on the ground looking and reflecting at the growth of learning and art they had visually made in the hallwall.
